Introduction

In this paper there is not going to be a lot of commentary but a lot of Scripture verses that prove that on salvation, the Catholic faith is truly biblical. There are a lot of aspects to the Catholic view of justification. The sacraments, righteousness, works, obedience, discipline, etc. In this paper, I will just give lots of Scriptures that show the Catholic view of justification is correct. This will be just a list of Scriptures with just a few words to say how it is consistent with the Catholic view of justification. Now, some of these Scriptures I will provide links to where I have examined these Scriptures in depth, if you want to look at commentary that I have done on these passages, I will provide the link. Now, one aspect that I have done a similar paper on, I did not repeat, because I have already shown multiple passages which show one, in a state of grace, can lose salvation. That list of Scriptures is shown in the following paper: The List of New Testament Scriptures that Show You Can Lose Salvation. In that paper every book of the New Testament except Philemon had at least one citation which showed that one can lose salvation. Those voluminous Scriptures I will not repeat here, unless it shows another aspect of salvation/justification that I am highlighting here. In this paper I will go over Scriptures that show many other aspects of the Catholic view of salvation. Just a few words after the citation I will show why I quoted this particular passage. I will quote first a Scripture or two from the Old Testament, to show there is a precedent for the New Testament outlook, but my main focus will be on New Testament Scriptures. There are others that I probably could have quoted, but I made judgement to pass over. Here goes:


Sacraments and Justification


Baptism

Baptism regenerates and initiates us into God's family.


Ezekiel 36:23-26:

23: And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them; and the nations will know that I am the LORD, says the Lord GOD, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes. 24: For I will take you from the nations, and gather you from all the countries, and bring you into your own land. 25: I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. 26: A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will take out of your flesh the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. In order to vindicate God's holiness, in the new covenant, water will be given that will cleanse one from all uncleanness. That points to baptism, which wipes out original sin.
Mk. 16:16:
He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. Jesus says Baptism brings salvation.

John 3:5:
Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Christianity for 15 centuries thought this meant baptism, especially with the context of baptism Jn 3:22, 4:2, water brings the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:38 -
And Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit Peter says baptism brings forgiveness of sins and the Holy Spirit.
Acts 22:16: -
And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on his name. Paul tells the prospective believer that he needs baptism to get the forgiveness of sins.
Romans 6:3-4:
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. Paul says we enter into his death through baptism which makes us new in him.
1 Corinthians 6:11:
11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. Washing = baptism which brings sanctification and justification.
Galatians 3:27:
For as many of you as have been baptized into christ have put on Christ. It is by baptism that you put on Christ
Colossians 2:11-13: -
11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: 12 buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses. Baptism puts off the sins of the flesh by being buried with Christ.
Titus 3:5:
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by THE WASHING OF REGENERATION, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Baptism has been cited by Paul and Peter to wash away sins, here it says Baptism regenerates, and Brings the Holy Spirit.
1 Peter 3:21:
Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Here it says baptism saves you, what more can be said.

Confession

Jesus instituted this Sacrament for sins committed after baptism.

Numbers 5:6-9:

5: And the LORD said to Moses, 6: "Say to the people of Israel, When a man or woman commits any of the sins that men commit by breaking faith with the LORD, and that person is guilty, 7: he shall confess his sin which he has committed; and he shall make full restitution for his wrong, adding a fifth to it, and giving it to him to whom he did the wrong. 8: But if the man has no kinsman to whom restitution may be made for the wrong, the restitution for wrong shall go to the LORD for the priest, in addition to the ram of atonement with which atonement is made for him. 9: And every offering, all the holy things of the people of Israel, which they bring to the priest, shall be his; Precedent is that a priest can forgive sins.
John 20:21-23:
21: Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." 22: And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23: If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." Jesus speaking to the apostles says that they have the power to forgive or retain sins. He is indeed the one and only mediator, see 1 Timothy 2:5, but this is the way He decided to mediate.
Matthew 9:2-8:
2 And behold, they brought to him a paralytic, lying on his bed; and when Jesus saw their faith he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven." 3 And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming." 4 But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise and walk'? 6 But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins" --he then said to the paralytic--"Rise, take up your bed and go home." 7 And he rose and went home. 8 When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men. Here the apostle Matthew acknowledges that God gave authority, through Jesus, the power to men to forgive sins. True, Jesus had not given the Sacrament yet, but lays the foundation for what he proclaims in Matthew 18:15-18 and John 20:22-23.
Matthew 18:15-18:
15 If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. 18 Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. In the context of sins, he tells the apostles that what they bind on earth is bound in heaven, i.e., they have the authority to forgive sins.
Acts 19:17-19:
17 And this became known to all residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks; and fear fell upon them all; and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled. 18 Many also of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices. 19 And a number of those who practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all; and they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver. People who were already believers, confessed sins.
2 Cor. 2:10:
10 Any one whom you forgive, I also forgive. What I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence (person) of Christ, Actual translation is 'person' of Christ. He forgives in the person of Christ, exercising his Ministry of Reconciliation stated in 2 Corinthians 5.
2 Cor. 5:17-20
17 Therefore, if any one is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 So we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We beseech you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. Paul himself is given the Ministry of Reconciliation. And he says be reconciled to God, through this ministry.
James 5:13-16:
13 Is any one among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15 and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects. Confession of sins, with the background of the elders, points to confession.

Eucharist

The Eucharist consists of the real Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, and this Sacrament not only is real, but is a sacrifice that provides grace that forgives sins:

Exodus 24:6-8:
5: And he sent young men of the people of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen to the LORD. 6: And Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and half of the blood he threw against the altar. 7: Then he took the book of the covenant, and read it in the hearing of the people; and they said, "All that the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient." 8: And Moses took the blood and threw it upon the people, and said, " Behold the blood of the covenant which the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words." This is the sacrifice of oxen. Sacrificial offerings to the Lord. This language is reflected when Jesus offers his true Blood in Sacrifice in the Eucharist.
Malachi 1:11:
11: For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name, and a pure offering; for my name is great among the nations, says the LORD of hosts. Malachi speaks of a time that there will be a pure offering in Sacrifice to the Lord of hosts. Christians, from the 1st Century Didache, all saw this as an offering of the Eucharist, which will forgive sins.

51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh." 52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" 53 So Jesus said to them, " Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; 54 he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. 56 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever." The Eucharist gives grace that will help those who partake, live eternally. He compares it to the old manna, it gives superior grace.
Matthew 26:28:
for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins. The Eucharist is made present and is shed, partake of it and you get the forgiveness of sins.
Luke 22:19-20:
19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying,. Do this in remembrance of me." 20 And likewise the cup after supper, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. New Covenant in His Blood, not a symbol. Poured out, means sacrificial offering. A sacrificial offering that forgives sins.
1 Corinthians 10:14-16, 20-21:
14 Therefore, my beloved, shun the worship of idols. 15 I speak as to sensible men; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?
20 No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be partners with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Paul surely compares the Eucharist to the sacrificial offering to idols by idolaters. Besides specifically saying this is the real blood of Christ, compares the Eucharistic offering to the pagan offering, which spells out the Eucharist is a sacrifice that does forgive sins.
Hebrews 9:22-23:
19 For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, "This is the blood of the covenant which God commanded you." 21 And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship. 22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. 23 Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. Hebrews author changes the words in Exodus 24 to match Jesus words 'This is the blood of the covenant ' The new covenant has a better sacrifice than the old covenant, and we now have better sacrifices, which is the once & for all sacrifice of Christ made present in the Eucharist, which forgives sin.
Hebrews 10:13:
10 We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. In the New Covenant we have a sacrifice that the Levites had no right to partake of, but believers do.

Keeping the Commandments: Law Not Done Away With for Salvation

Though the law in and of itself saves no one, through grace, and as sons, we can still keep the commandments in order to achieve eternal salvation.


Psalm 119:33-35:

33: Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I will keep it to the end. 34: Give me understanding, that I may keep thy law and observe it with my whole heart. 35: Lead me in the path of thy commandments, for I delight in it.With God's help the Psalmist can keep the commandments.
Psalm 119:41-45:
41: Let thy steadfast love come to me, O LORD, thy salvation according to thy promise; 42: then shall I have an answer for those who taunt me, for I trust in thy word. 43: And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for my hope is in thy ordinances. 44: I will keep thy law continually, for ever and ever ; 45: and I shall walk at liberty, for I have sought thy precepts.
47: for I find my delight in thy commandments, which I love. 48: I revere thy commandments, which I love, and I will meditate on thy statutes. God's salvation comes and it is upon His help that one can not only delight in his commandments, but can keep them.
Matthew 5:17-18
17 "Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them. 18 For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Jesus came to fulfill the law, not that salvation totally does away with the law in reference to our salvation.
Matthew 19:16-17:
16 And behold, one came up to him, saying, "Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?" 17 And he said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? One there is who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments." Keeping the commandments is the means of salvation.
Mark 10:17-19:
17 And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" 18 And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 19 You know the commandments: 'Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.'" Keeping the commandments is necessary for salvation.
Luke 10:25-28:
25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 26 He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read?" 27 And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." 28 And he said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will live."The law is integral to salvation. Love God and Neighbor, do it right, you get eternal life.
Luke 10:24-27:
24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it." 25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 26 He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read?" 27 And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." 28 And he said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will live." In order to be saved, we must fulfill the law in reference to God and neighbor.
Luke 16:16-17:
16 "The law and the prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and every one enters it violently. 17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one dot of the law to become void. The law is not done away with.
Luke 18:18-21:
' 18 And a ruler asked him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 19 And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 20 You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.'" Jesus spells out here the commandments to keep in order to inherit eternal life.
John 14:15:
15 "If you love me, you will keep my commandments. Jesus says we can keep the commandments.
John 14:21:
"He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me; and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him." Only those who keep the commandments will be loved and manifest Himself to them."
John 15:10:
"If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love." You only abide in His love if you keep the commandments.
John 15:14:
"You are my friends if you do what I command you." We are God's friend only if we do his commandments.
Romans 2:13:
For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. Doers of the law will be justified. Does not say it can't be done.
Romans 2:26-29:
26 So, if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? 27 Then those who are physically uncircumcised but keep the law will condemn you who have the written code and circumcision but break the law. 28 For he is not a real Jew who is one outwardly, nor is true circumcision something external and physical. 29 He is a Jew who is one inwardly, and real circumcision is a matter of the heart, spiritual and not literal. His praise is not from men but from God.Gentiles can keep the law of the Spirit. God gives praise to those who are obedient to Him.
Romans 8:2-4:
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. We are required to keep the law of the Spirit. We must meet the righteous requirement of the law.
Romans 13:8-10:
8 Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not covet," and any other commandment, are summed up in this sentence, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. We can fulfill the law by keeping the commandments in love.
1 Corinthians 7:19:
19 For neither circumcision counts for anything nor uncircumcision, but keeping the commandments of God. Keeping the commandments matters.
Galatians 6:2
Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. We are called to fulfill the law of Christ.
Hebrews 8:10
10 This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. The law of the Lord must be in our heart.
James 1:23-25:
23 For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who observes his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But he who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer that forgets but a doer that acts, he shall be blessed in his doing. We muist be a doer of the law.
James 2:12-13:
12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. 13 For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy; yet mercy triumphs over judgment.Go by the law of liberty.
1 John 2:3-4:
3 And by this we may be sure that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He who says "I know him" but disobeys his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him; We know Him only if we keep the commandments,
1 John 2:23-24:
23 And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24 All who keep his commandments abide in him, and he in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit which he has given us. We only abide with him if we keep the commandments.
1 John 5:1-4:
1 Every one who believes that Jesus is the Christ is a child of God, and every one who loves the parent loves the child. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. We can keep the commandments which are not burdensome.
Revelation 12:17:
17 Then the dragon was angry with the woman, and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and bear testimony to Jesus. And he stood on the sand of the sea. Believers keep the commandments, Satan does not like that.
Revelation 22:14: (King James Version)
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. Believers keep the commandments, only then do they have the right to the tree of life.

Works, Obedience, Other Things, Righteousness, Increase in Righteousness, Final Judgment

Through grace we can obey, and work out our salvation with fear and trembling, and our own righteousness we will give an account to God. Through grace our righteousness can increase.


Psalm 62:12:

and that to thee, O Lord, belongs steadfast love. For thou dost requite a man according to his work. God judges us based on our works.
Isaiah 59:15-18:
15: Truth is lacking, and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey. The LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no justice. 16: He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no one to intervene; then his own arm brought him victory, and his righteousness upheld him. 17: He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation upon his head; he put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and wrapped himself in fury as a mantle. 18: According to their deeds, so will he repay, wrath to his adversaries, requital to his enemies; to the coastlands he will render requital. God ultimately will uphold the righteousness of those who put on righteousness as a breastplate, Ephesians 6, and wrath to those who disobey.
Matthew 5:3-12:
3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. 8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 "Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you. Jesus says these things are salvific. Mercy, pursuit of holiness, purity, not just nice things, but point to salvation,
Matthew 6:12-16:
12 And forgive us our debts, As we also have forgiven our debtors; 13 And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. 14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; 15 but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Jesus says in order to get forgiven by God, you must forgive others.
Matthew 7:21-28:
21 "Not every one who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' 23 And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.' 24 " Every one then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock; 25 and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And every one who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand; 27 and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it." The dividing line between heaven and hell is based on what one does and does not do.
Matthew 10:22:

Matthew 12:35-37:
35 The good man out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil man out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. 36 I tell you, on the day of judgment men will render account for every careless word they utter; 37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned." We will get judged by what we say and do.
Matthew 16:27:
24 Then Jesus told his disciples, " If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life? 27 For the Son of man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay every man for what he has done. One must deny himself in order to be with God. Every person will be judged based on what he has done.
Matthew 18:32-36:
32 Then his lord summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you besought me; 33 and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?' 34 And in anger his lord delivered him to the jailers, till he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart." Forgiveness from God is dependent on you forgiving other people.
Matthew 24:11-13:
11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12 And because wickedness is multiplied, most men's love will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end will be saved. Must endure in order to be saved.
Matthew 25:14-30:
14 "For it will be as when a man going on a journey called his servants and entrusted to them his property; 15 to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. 16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them; and he made five talents more. 17 So also, he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18 But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. 19 Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. 20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.' 21 His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' 22 And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.' 23 His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' 24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not winnow; 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' 26 But his master answered him, 'You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not winnowed? 27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29 For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.' The person who was just negligent, gets condemned to hell. He did not put to use the gifts he was given by God.

31"When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33 and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. 34 Then the King will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' 37 Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink? 38 And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee? 39And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?' 40 And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' 41 Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' 44 Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?' 45 Then he will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.' 46And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." Final judgment reflects getting to heaven or hell, based on whether one had helped people or not.
Mark 7:20-23:
20 And he said, "What comes out of a man is what defiles a man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, fornication, theft, murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a man."Avoidance of mortal sins are necessary to attain eternal life.
Mark 8:34-38: See also Luke 9:23-26
34 And he called to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them, " If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? 37 For what can a man give in return for his life? 38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." Taking up the cross is necessary for salvation and one must acknowledge Jesus before man.
Mark 13:11-13:
11 And when they bring you to trial and deliver you up, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say; but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. 12 And brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; 13 and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved. Endurance is necessary for salvation.
Luke 3:8-9:
8 Bear fruits that befit repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 9 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." John the Baptist says you don’t do good works, you don't get to heaven.
Luke 6:43-49:
43 "For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; 44 for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 The good man out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil man out of his evil treasure produces evil; for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. 46 "Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you? 47 Every one who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep, and laid the foundation upon rock; and when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But he who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; against which the stream broke, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great." Must bear good fruit and must obey, do what the Lord commands you to do, or else you will fall into ruin.
Luke 8:15:
And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience. Those who go to heaven are those who bring forth fruit with patience.
Luke 8:44-50:
44 Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, " Do you see this woman? I entered your house, you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little." 48 And he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." 49 Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, "Who is this, who even forgives sins?" 50 And he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."Faith saves, but she did good works and that action, plus the love that she showed is what mentioned when He mentions faith. Faith without works is dead.
Luke 13:24-28:
24 "Strive to enter by the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 When once the householder has risen up and shut the door, you will begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, 'Lord, open to us.' He will answer you, 'I do not know where you come from.' 26 Then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.' 27 But he will say, 'I tell you, I do not know where you come from; depart from me, all you workers of iniquity!' 28 There you will weep and gnash your teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves thrust out. In order to get to heaven, one must strive, work, to enter. You partake in unforgiven iniquity you will not enter heaven.
Luke 14:13-14:
13 But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just." Good deeds one gets paid for in the 'resurrection of the just.'
Luke 19:8-10:
8 And Zacchae'us stood and said to the Lord, " Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." 9 And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost."Giving to the poor equals salvation according to Jesus.
Luke 21:34-36:
34 "But take heed to yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a snare; 35 for it will come upon all who dwell upon the face of the whole earth. 36 But watch at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of man."One must avoid passions that will destroy one's soul.
John 3:21:
21 But he who does what is true comes to the light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been wrought in God. Only if one does right does one come to the light.
John 3:36:
36 He who believes in the Son has eternal life; he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God rests upon him.Believing ain't enough. Disobedience brings God's wrath.
John 4:36:
He who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. Good works inherit the reward of eternal life.
John 5:28-29:
28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come forth, those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment. Doing good brings good judgment, bad, damnation.
Acts 10:34-35:
34 And Peter opened his mouth and said: "Truly I perceive that God shows no partiality, 35 but in every nation any one who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. Any one who fears him and does good is in good stead with God.
Acts 26:18:
to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'Faith equals sanctification.
Romans 1:5:
Through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations.Paul equates faith with obedience.

God's mercy is basis for justification before God, includes works, obedience and doing good, doers of the law, attain justification before God.

Faith plus suffering, endurance, character, hope, but infusion of love being poured into our hearts is part of this justification.

Justification means separation from sin.
Romans 6:16:
16 Do you not know that if you yield yourselves to any one as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?Obedience is essential in being righteous before God.
Romans 6:22:
But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the return you get is sanctification and its end, eternal life.Reward for Sanctification is eternal life.
Romans 8:12-13:
12 So then, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh-- 13 for if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live. Our salvation is depending on putting to death bad deeds of the flesh.

14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of sonship. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" 16 it is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. Justification is not judicial only, but a Father-Son relationship, heirs, but we must suffer in order to inherit God's kingdom.
Romans 11:21-23:
21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. 22 Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off. 23 And even the others, if they do not persist in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again.One must do the act of continuing in kindness in order to remain in God's grace.
Romans 13:11-14:
11 Besides this you know what hour it is, how it is full time now for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed; 12 the night is far gone, the day is at hand. Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; 13 let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.Salvation means you have to cast off deeds of darkness. One must put on salvation by putting to death the deeds of the flesh.

1 Cor. 1:18:
For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. Salvation is an ongoing process, Paul includes self as one who Is being saved.
1 Corinthians 4:3-5:
3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. I do not even judge myself. 4 I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. 5 Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then every man will receive his commendation from God. We do not acquit ourself. We can't pronounce our judgment until the race is finished, and God who is the only judge..

1 Corinthians 15:1-2:
1 Now I would remind you, brethren, in what terms I preached to you the gospel, which you received, in which you stand, 2 by which you are saved, if you hold it fast--unless you believed in vain. You must stand and endure, otherwise, one can actually believe in vain.
2 Corinthians 3:3-6:
3 and you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. 4 Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. 5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to claim anything as coming from us; our sufficiency is from God, 6 who has made us sufficiency to be ministers of a new covenant, not in a written code but in the Spirit; for the written code kills, but the Spirit gives life. We are not in relation to God in justification through the written law but a new covenant with him. We get our sufficiency, in our action, through God himself.
2 Corinthians 3:18:
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being changed into his likeness from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.We are being changed from one degree of glory to another. Increase in righteousness, one degree to another.

Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. After saying we become the righteousness of God. We have to work with God, so to accept the grace of God will not be in vain. Now is the day of salvation, showing that salvation is not merely a past event.
2 Corinthians 6:18-7:1:
18 and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty." 2 Corinthians 7 1 Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God. , We are his children but through His Spirit, we are requested to cleanse ourselves from every defilement.
2 Corinthians 9:8-10:
8 And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work. 9 As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever." 10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness. God is the one who provides grace which provides in abundance of good work. He will provide the increase of the harvest of your righteousness. Increase in righteousness.
Galatians 4:3-9:
3 So with us; when we were children, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe. 4 But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" 7 So through God you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son then an heir. 8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were in bondage to beings that by nature are no gods; 9 but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental spirits, whose slaves you want to be once more? 10 You observe days, and months, and seasons, and years! 11 I am afraid I have labored over you in vain. Our justification is based not on courtroom but as adopted sons. Set free from bondage to sin, and must persevere so don't fall back into sin.
Galatians 5:5-6:
5 For through the Spirit, by faith, we wait for the hope of righteousness. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is of any avail, but faith working through love. We have hope of righteousness and justifying faith must be accompanied by love.
Galatians 6:5-9:
5 For each man will have to bear his own load. 6 Let him who is taught the word share all good things with him who teaches. 7 Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption; but he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due season we shall reap, if we do not lose heart. One sows works through the Holy Spirit and will reap from those works eternal life.

8 Indeed I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own, based on law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith; 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that if possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brethren, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. We can not do anything on our own righteousness, but that which is given through God. We have not attained salvation yet, not guaranteed, we must strive for it.
Colossians 1:21-24
21 And you, who once were estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him, 23 provided that you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which has been preached to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister. 24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church.We must continue in faith, only then can we be blameless before him, and we must suffer, Paul himself said we must complete in our flesh what is lacking in Christ's affliction, Paul's words not mine.
Col. 3:5-13:
5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you once walked, when you lived in them. 8 But now put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and foul talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old nature with its practices 10 and have put on the new nature, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. 11 Here there cannot be Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scyth'ian, slave, free man, but Christ is all, and in all. 12 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, and patience, 13 forbearing one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. One must put to death the deeds of the flesh. In order to get to heaven, one must put on the virtues and gifts from God and live by the new nature in order to get to heaven. Just like Jesus said, in order to get forgiven by God, we must forgive those who have sinned against us.
Colossians 3:23-25:
23 Whatever your task, work heartily, as serving the Lord and not men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward; you are serving the Lord Christ. 25 For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality. We are to work heartily to serve the Lord. The reward is an inheritance from Him. God will reward those who work heartily, and punish the wrongdoers.
1 Thessalonians 3:3-9:
We are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, as is fitting, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing. 4 Therefore we ourselves boast of you in the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions which you are enduring. 5 This is evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be made worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering-- 6 since indeed God deems it just to repay with affliction those who afflict you, 7 and to grant rest with us to you who are afflicted, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 inflicting vengeance upon those who do not know God and upon those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They shall suffer the punishment of eternal destruction and exclusion from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might, We must grow in faith, faith grows in righteousness. We must suffer. We must be made worthy of the Kingdom of God, those who disobey get the wrath of God. Only those who obey are worthy of the kingdom.

But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.How is one saved? Through belief, but also sanctification by the Spirit. One is saved through sanctification.
1 Timothy 6:10-12:
10 For the love of money is the root of all evils; it is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced their hearts with many pangs. 11 But as for you, man of God, shun all this; aim at righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.Only through aiming at righteousness and godliness, faith love, etc. will one take hold of eternal life. You do not aim for that, you will not get eternal life.
1 Timothy 6:17-19:
17 As for the rich in this world, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on uncertain riches but on God who richly furnishes us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good deeds, liberal and generous, 19 thus laying up for themselves a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life which is life indeed. Rich in Christ must be rich in good deeds to take hold of eternal life.

11 For the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men, 12 training us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions, and to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world, 13 awaiting our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. Salvation is by renouncing irreligion and grace purifies us from all iniquity as the means of salvation.

3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by men and hating one another; 4 but when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit, 6 which he poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. We do not work our way into justification, however, God changes us, and saves us by baptism and regeneration by the Holy Spirit, so we have the hope of eternal life. Not a guarantee but a hope. He transforms us from dead in sins, to righteous people in Gods sight, that we must maintain in order to get eternal life, as just mentioned in Titus 2:11-14.
Hebrews 4:11-14:
Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. 4:12 For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things [are] naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. 14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. We must labor in order to enter God's rest. Through the power of Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 5:9:
and being made perfect he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him. Jesus is the source of salvation only to those who obey him. No obedience, no salvation.
Hebrews 6:9-12:
7 For land which has drunk the rain that often falls upon it, and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. 8 But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed; its end is to be burned. 9 Though we speak thus, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things that belong to salvation. 10 For God is not so unjust as to overlook your work and the love which you showed for his sake in serving the saints, as you still do. 11 And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness in realizing the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Hebrews compares works to vegetation. Good vegetation = good works and salvation. Bad vegetation = Bad works = damnation. Inheritance of the kingdom, is only when combined with work and love, faith, love.
Hebrews 11:6-8:
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. 7 By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, took heed and constructed an ark for the saving of his household; by this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness which comes by faith. 8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place which he was to receive as an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was to go. Hebrews says without faith impossible to please God, and a justified person Obeys God (5:9). He confirms Abraham in Genesis 12 was a justified person already.
James 1:19-22:
19 Know this, my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger, 20 for the anger of man does not work the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rank growth of wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. How does one save one's soul? Put away filthiness and one must do the word.

14 What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is ill-clad and in lack of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. 18 But some one will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe--and shudder. 20 a) Do you want to be shown, you shallow man, that faith apart from works is barren?

---------------------- 22 c) You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by works,

26 a) For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so faith apart from works is dead. James puts a section, v. 20-26, chiasm which he repeats himself twice (20 to 26), (21 to 25), ( 22 to 24), v. 23 center of it), Rahab, Abraham, justified by works, explicitly denying justification by faith alone, and without works, faith is dead. The buildup in verses 14-19, laid down the background for this is salvation, not vindication or demonstration of faith.
1 Peter, 1:14-17:
13 Therefore gird up your minds, be sober, set your hope fully upon the grace that is coming to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; 16 since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy." 17 And if you invoke as Father him who judges each one impartially according to his deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile. We are judged as children, but we have to give account of all our deeds.
1 Peter 1:18-22:
18 You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your fathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20 He was destined before the foundation of the world but was made manifest at the end of the times for your sake. 21 Through him you have confidence in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. 22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere love of the brethren, love one another earnestly from the heart. Jesus' precious blood takes us from the futile ways of sin. His blood makes us so our souls are purified by our obedience to the truth.
1 Peter 2:21-24:
21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin; no guile was found on his lips. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he trusted to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. His purpose in dying is to make us live in righteousness.
2 Peter 2:2-11:
2 May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, that through these you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of passion, and become partakers of the divine nature. 5 For this very reason make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For whoever lacks these things is blind and shortsighted and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. 10 Therefore, brethren, be the more zealous to confirm your call and election, for if you do this you will never fall; 11 so there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Infusion of grace, makes us partakers of the divine nature. Only if we get these virtues from God, and apply them, will we be able to enter the kingdom of heaven.
1 John 3:7-11:
7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who does right is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 He who commits sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one born of God commits sin; for God's nature abides in him, and he cannot sin because he is born of God. 10 By this it may be seen who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not do right is not of God, nor he who does not love his brother. 11 For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. In the midst of other passages which speak of the necessity of keeping the commandments, John proclaims one must be righteous.
Jude 1:20-24:
20 But you, beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; 21 keep yourselves in the love of God; wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. 22 And convince some, who doubt; 23 save some, by snatching them out of the fire; on some have mercy with fear, hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. 24 Now to him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you without blemish before the presence of his glory with rejoicing, God is able to keep us from falling when we pray in the Holy Spirit, keep ourselves in the love of God, and wait for His mercy.
Revelation 2:10:
10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.One must stay true, be faithful unto death in order to inherit heaven.
Revelation 2:23:
I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you as your works deserve. Final judgment is based on our works.
Revelation 3:1-4:
'I know your works; you have the name of being alive, and you are dead. 2 Awake, and strengthen what remains and is on the point of death, for I have not found your works perfect in the sight of my God. 3 Remember then what you received and heard; keep that, and repent. If you will not awake, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come upon you. 4 Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white, for they are worthy. 5 He who conquers shall be clad thus in white garments, and I will not blot his name out of the book of life. The diference between walking with God is the works. Those who have bad works will be condemned those who have good works will walk with God.
Revelation 14:12-13:
12 Here is a call for the endurance of the saints, those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. 13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying, "Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord henceforth." "Blessed indeed," says the Spirit, "that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!" Saints are those who keep the commandments and do good works, the good deeds are rewarded with heaven.
Revelation 20:11-15:
11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who sat upon it; from his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Also another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, by what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead in them, and all were judged by what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire; 15 and if any one's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. All are judged by what they had done.
Revelation 21:6-8:
6 And he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the fountain of the water of life without payment. 7 He who conquers shall have this heritage, and I will be his God and he shall be my son. 8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, as for murderers, fornicators, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their lot shall be in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur, which is the second death." He who makes the effort to conquer will be his son. Those in sin will get sent to hell.
Revelation 22:11-15: New King James Version
11 He who is unjust, let him be unjust still; he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; he who is righteous, let him [e]be righteous still; he who is holy, let him be holy still.” 12 “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the [f]Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.”14 Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. 15 [h]But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.Only those who practice righteousness will get rewarded by Jesus Himselfeeps the commandments.

Pursuit of Righteousness, Holiness, Cause of Salvation

The pursuit of grace empowered holiness and righteousness is necessary for salvation.


Psalm 7:8-10:

8: The LORD judges the peoples; judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness and according to the integrity that is in me. 9: O let the evil of the wicked come to an end, but establish thou the righteous, thou who triest the minds and hearts, thou righteous God. 10: My shield is with God, who saves the upright in heart. God judges based on our own righteousness.
Psalm 106:29-31:
29 They provoked the LORD to anger with their doings, and a plague broke out among them. 30: Then Phin'ehas stood up and interposed, and the plague was stayed. 31: And that has been reckoned to him as righteousness from generation to generation for ever. The exact same terminology Paul uses in Romans 4:3 about Paul talking about Abraham's reckoned for righteousness. Slaying of idolaters is righteous act.
Matthew 5:20:
For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Our personal righteousness must exceed that of the Pharisees.
Luke 1:5-6:
5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechari'ah, of the division of Abi'jah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. Zechariah and Elizabeth are deemed righteous before God, though imperfect.
John 8:31-36:
31 Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." 33 They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham, and have never been in bondage to any one. How is it that you say, 'You will be made free'?" 34 Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, every one who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not continue in the house for ever; the son continues for ever. 36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. His whole purpose in coming is to set us free us from the bondage of sin, not cover us from it.
Romans 1:17:
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith; as it is written, "He who through faith is righteous shall live."The person himself is righteous before God.

Romans 5:17-21
15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. 16 And the free gift is not like the effect of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification. 17 If, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. 18 Then as one man's trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one man's act of righteousness leads to acquittal and life for all men. 19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by one man's obedience many will be made righteous. 20 Law came in, to increase the trespass; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. God really undoes the sin of Adam by enabling us to reign in righteousness, and justification is by definition being made righteous, not just declared righteous.
Ephesians 4:22-24:
22 Put off your old nature which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and put on the new nature, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. True righteousness and holiness is necessary to stave off deceitful lusts that can cause us to commit sins that separate us from God.
Ephesians 6:14-17:
14 Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the equipment of the gospel of peace; 16 besides all these, taking the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Put on the breastplate of righteousness in reference to the helmet of salvation.
1 Thessalonians 1:11:
Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you; 12 and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all men, as we do to you, 13 so that he may establish your hearts unblameable in holiness. God can make us increase in love and righteousness, with the goal to make us unblameable in righteousness. No imputation that made us perfect.
1 Thessalonians 3:11-13:
11 Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you; 12 and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all men, as we do to you, 13 so that he may establish your hearts unblameable in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. God himself will make us holy, he will increase us in our righteousness and holiness.
1 Thessalonians 5:21-23:
21 but test everything; hold fast what is good, 22 abstain from every form of evil. 23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful, and he will do it. God needs to sanctify you. No imputation at all.
Hebrews 12:14:
Strive for peace with all men, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. Striving for holiness is the means of salvation.
James 5:17:
The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects. Eli'jah was a man of like nature with ourselves and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Elijah, an example of an ontologically righteous person.
1 Peter 3:10-12:
10 For "He that would love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking guile; 11 let him turn away from evil and do right; let him seek peace and pursue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those that do evil."The Lord is on the righteous, believers are righteous, and a part of salvation is striving for righteousness.
2 Peter 2:7-8:
7 and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the licentiousness of the wicked 8 (for by what that righteous man saw and heard as he lived among them, he was vexed in his righteous soul day after day with their lawless deeds), Lot, a very flawed person, is considered a righteous person.
Revelation 21:25-27:
25 and its gates shall never be shut by day--and there shall be no night there; 26 they shall bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. 27 But nothing unclean shall enter it, nor any one who practices abomination or falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life Nothing unclean will enter heaven, so personal righteousness must be present, nothing about imputation.

Mortal and Venial Sins

There are distinctions in sin gravity that effect our relationship with God.


Lev. 5:4-6:

4: Or if any one utters with his lips a rash oath to do evil or to do good, any sort of rash oath that men swear, and it is hidden from him, when he comes to know it he shall in any of these be guilty. 5: When a man is guilty in any of these, he shall confess the sin he has committed, 6: and he shall bring his guilt offering to the LORD for the sin which he has committed, a female from the flock, a lamb or a goat, for a sin offering; and the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin. Smaller sins, i.e., venial sins can be forgiven in confession, these are smaller sins.
Leviticus 20:10-13:
10: " If a man commits adultery with the wife of his neighbor, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall be put to death. 11: The man who lies with his father's wife has uncovered his father's nakedness; both of them shall be put to death, their blood is upon them. 12: If a man lies with his daughter-in-law, both of them shall be put to death; they have committed incest, their blood is upon them. 13: If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death, their blood is upon them. Adultery, sex with Mother, sex with daughter, homosexuality, are mortal sins, in the Old Testament, penalty is actual physical death.
Proverbs 24:16:
for a righteous man falls seven times, and rises again; but the wicked are overthrown by calamity. Even righteous men will sin, but stay in God's grace, i.e., venial sins.
Matthew 5:19:
19 Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Relaxing the commandments for small sins but still attain salvation, i.e., they were only venial sins.

21 "You have heard that it was said to the men of old, 'You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.' 22 But I say to you that A) everyone who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; B)whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, C) 'You fool!' shall be liable to the hell of fire. Jesus speaks of three different actions bringing three different results. The first two actions, a and b, bring punishment, but only lighter, whereas the harshest action of c, makes one go to hell. So first two venial, third, mortal.
Luke 15:21-36:
21 And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' 22 But the father said to his servants, 'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet; 23 and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry; 24 for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to make merry. 25 "Now his elder son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 And he called one of the servants and asked what this meant. 27 And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.' 28 But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, 29 but he answered his father, 'Lo, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the fatted calf!' 31 And he said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32 It was fitting to make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.'" Last part of prodigal son story. So the famous prodigal son story shows two things. If a person commits mortal sins, one becomes lost, and is out of God's grace. However, he repents, and gets back into his grace. Also, the other son, had jealousy and envy, venial sin, but was still in God's grace, as he had not gone into the mortal sin that his brother had done.

10: According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and another man is building upon it. Let each man take care how he builds upon it. 11: For no other foundation can any one lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12: Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw -- 13: each man's work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14: 1) If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15: 2) If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. 16: Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? 17: 3) If any one destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and that temple you are. Three states. 1) v. 14, First person who has works untainted by sin, goes to heaven, immediately. 2) There are sins which bring punishment (as through fire), still get to heaven (consistent with purgatory), i.e. person died with venial sins. 3) Verse 17, a person who destroys God's temple, mortal sins, gets destroyed by God, goes to hell (mortal sin).

9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor sexual perverts, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. Paul gives a list of mortal sins that if you have on your soul, prevents you from entering the kingdom of heaven.
Galatians 5:18-21 -
18 But if you are led by the Spirit you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are plain: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger, selfishness, dissension, party spirit, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Paul gives us a list of mortal sins that if you have on your soul, stops you from getting to heaven, a definition of mortal sin.

3 But fornication and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is fitting among saints. 4 Let there be no filthiness, nor silly talk, nor levity, which are not fitting; but instead let there be thanksgiving. 5 Be sure of this, that no fornicator or impure man, or one who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for it is because of these things that the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Paul gives another list of mortal sins.
Hebrews 12:5-11:
5 And have you forgotten the exhortation which addresses you as sons? --" My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor lose courage when you are punished by him. 6 For the Lord disciplines him whom he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives." 7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers to discipline us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time at their pleasure, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. 11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant; later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. We are treated as God's son and daughters. We are punished, disciplined as sons for our small, or lesser sins. The purpose of punishment is to train us for holiness, but we remain in His grace.
Hebrews 12:12-17:
12 Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed. 14 Strive for peace with all men, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one fail to obtain the grace of God; that no "root of bitterness" spring up and cause trouble, and by it the many become defiled;; 16 that no one be immoral or irreligious like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. 17 For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears. After telling us we must strive for holiness for salvation, he warns us not to be like Esau, who committed a mortal sin.
James 3:5-11:
5 So the tongue is a little member and boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is an unrighteous world among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the cycle of nature, and set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by humankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue-- a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brethren, this ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening fresh water and brackish? James uses hyperbole to some extent about no one being able to control the tongue at all. Actions by the tongue can lead to hell, but James hints that one must control that tongue to some extent, even if perhaps imperfectly. Inferred are that there are smaller sins that do not lead to hell as well, i.e., venial sins.
1 John 5:16-17:
16 If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal. The whole context is eternal life and death, 1 John 5:13, 20, not speaking of physical life or death. All sin is categorized as either venial, or mortal. Mortal sin leads to damnation, or venial sins, which though does not separate one from God, can damage one's soul.
